I want to strengthen my English skill, especially in speaking and listening.
So I am looking for someone interested in learning Mandarin...
Then we can practice Chinese/English together, by skype or MSN.

The next government will be better?

It's the chart of TSEC weighted index (Taiwan) today.
It's typical "next must be better", for everyone thinks next President won't be worse than President Chen. It's the worst situation now...the Taiwan economy will get better.
Now I start to think why our envrionment and economic lost simultaneously. (Sometimes they go in constrast way, but it went into the same bad direction during Chen's tenure.)
And how we survive in this global economy.

legislative election today

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/01/12/asia/taiwan.php

This election, KMT, the opposite party won almost 3/4 seats.

In the very important area, Taipei city, Taipei county, and Taoyuan county, they won 16 seats of 18. I said the those area are so important because it's the center of business and politics. And there are so many residents!

I know most foreign companies wish Mr. Ma win the president election, for KMT's economic is more attractive. I listened to his speach carefully this evening, he mentioned that the other parties' policies are also important and KMT should respect them. If he really won the president in March, I wish he remembered his promise today.

Ma is a bit special politician. One famous author, Lung Ying-Tai, said Ma flew to German to invite her join his team while he was Mayor of Taipei city. Lung warned him that she would insist her own principle. Ma answered her, "That's why I am here."

Hmmm... politic is so difficult... but it influents our economic, environmental problems, and so many aspects of life. Wish Taiwan can recover from recession and depression soon.

you want your own business?

Someone just wants to work in some famous company.
Someone just wants to save as much money as they can.
Someone just wants to have a stable life.

But, it is not what I really want.

I just quitted a job, as a researcher in water resource...I don't wanna to tell others why I chose to leave, because it sounds like excuse.

I felt sad and didn't know what career should I have.
Then I met a special English teacher today.
He travelled all over the world.
As he said, he wants to go to the highest, the lowest, the hottest, and the coldest place in the world, by himself, without any tourist company to help.

It's a very different view of life to me.

I was taught to study hard, attended to best high school, the best university...and worked for the most famous companies. So I worked for Deloitte just after graduating from graduate school.
However, I felt a bit discontent, so I told myself to work for environment at least one or two years.

Now I am just in the changing point, trying to go back to the normal way, looking for a job in a financial system.
But, why I am still so dissatisfied? I watched a video online... it saids the American will change their 14 jobs when they are 38 years old, on average. They said one of forth American haven't stayed in their current jobs for one year, half of them haven't for 5 years.
And school must teach the students to involve the jobs which do not exist now, using the technique we do not have now, to solve the problems we never met before.

Maybe there are chance to combine economic development and environment together... I really hope I can join it, to take the challenge to solve the most difficult problems.

But, where is it? Can somebody told me.

Stock market

(The following charts are from Yahoo!)

This is TSEC Weighted Index within these 5 days. You can see it shrunk and surged everyday. And my dad's blood pressure went up and down with it. But no matter how his blood pressure goes, the truth is his account lost a lot of blood.

For the reason why...

The next chart is how TSCE performed in the last 3 month...

Just as you see, the mkt went down and down. The investors felt down and down as well. I can't understand why many companies earned the record high profit, their stock price still went down. Some said it's because President Chen's economic policy make those companies difficult to transfer their capital back to Taiwan.

It's really nasty because there are also many limitation to invest other market, especially China. Even the mutual fund selling in Taiwan are forbidden from investing in China market for too high percentage.

Since President Chen's tenure is over in March, wish the situation getting better. Give my money back! (Well, it's not my money but my dad's.)

Is those MNCs evil?

I went to English class this afternoon and met a very special teacher.
He is not a Taiwanese but from US. One student in class talked about shopping in COSCO. COSCO is very popular here. The teacher suggested us not to go shopping at those outlet for they are destroying those family stores on the streets. The same stories happened again and again... 7-11 is the largest chain of convenient store here, it openes 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year. You can buy many kinds of beverage, snacks, meal(using their microwave), hot fast food...and you can fax, print your documents, withdraw money from their ATM... If you buy something online but don't want to pay by a Visa, you can pay for your goods in a 7-11 and get it there. No mention you can pay any bills there, even the fine bill! It also services as Fedex...you can sent your package there. They really take the advantage of their distribution power.
So you can imagine how many people lost their business...but for Taiwanese, it's hard to live without it now.
The quality is still okay in 7-11. The teacher told us COSCO sells many low quality products and some of them are forbidden in Europe and US for toxic ingredient. It's so sad our government dare not to say NO to American big companies. At least I didn't go to COSCO, and never will.
It requires buyers to have a membership, which costs more than 40 dollars a year. Only for one year, you got to pay for membership again after a year. You may just save a little with some cheaper products, but it has been covered in your membership. Besides, the economy loses many business...

Well, some student said it's fancy to shop in COSCO, just like you are in US~~ I don't know if it is true, since I never go there. But it's true in Asian countries, many people worship every western stuff.

[biz]Commercial aviation route btw China and Taiwan

I read the news on IHT about "China planning Taiwan Strait route for commercial aviation".
It is an hot issue in Taiwan. (Maybe not so important for mainland China.)

Many people think commercial aviation route between Taiwan and China could be the panacea for the recession in this decade. On the other hand, some concern the security, just like the President Chen said, "the new air route was part of China's efforts to expand the boundary of its airspace".
However, few poeple here care about what President Chen would say now. He is losing power and aspiration of citizenry. The economy stagnates during his tenure. People become poorer.
The income distribution becomes wider; we called it M-society, means that the middle-class is disappearing.

In my opinion, it may not be safer even without the air route since the enemy's crafts can still invade the island easily. It's so close between the island and mainland... And few people want to fight with China. There are so many families, friends there. What I care more is better life, democratic, economic, cultural issues should be more concerned now.
But many politicians still stick to the political ideology. Besides, some people are quite anxious to mainland China because of its rudeness. Sometimes China is really rude and makes us difficult to defend for it with those anxious people. Its policies sometimes just made an exactly opposite effect.

People interested in the news can check http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/01/06/business/aviation.php.

[Biz][eco] About Rupert Murdoch bought the Wall Street Journal

This is not a news, I think, that Murdoch bought the Wall Street Journal. He said the Wall Street Journal will change its editorial style from elite financial reporter to New York Times' style.

What occurred to me first is why another New York Times? We don't have many choices of financial newspaper. Well...there may be a lots good financial media in English...but in Chinese, especially in Taipei, the good financial news reporting are not so affluent.

I didn't notice that NY Times is owned by Murdoch, or I would be more amazed. Why would he sell the same things with just different names? Is there economic meaning behind it?

I haven't got the answer, but I know the economists are anxious for monopoly. I can still remeber in microeconomics class, our professor told us that she sometimes consumed something in 'incubator' even with incompetitive price... just wished to prevent the market from monopoly.
Hmmm, it seems not reasonable for an economist to do so...aren't they believe in capitalism or selfishness, like what invisible hand or something else?

In fact, I found many economists are altruists as well. What they want could not be capitalism, but maximum social welfare, which are always connecting to efficiency. Efficiency and capitalism are very different concepts, but some people just get crazy when they listen to the words. Well, it's okay... don't care about it.

By the way, if you'd like to do something to stop Murdoch, go http://freepress.net/murdoch/.

PS. I like Asian Wall Street Journal. :P
